Pointless Weekend of Racing

If there was ever a weekend for race fans to step away from their televisions/radio/computers and forget about racing - this is it.

Over in Charlotte, the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series is running it's pointless - both literally and figuratively speaking - All-Star Challenge while Indianapolis will play host to third round qualifying (for those vital positions 23 - 33) and Bump Day (which as of right now will see all of two cars possibly getting bumped out of the Indianapolis 500).

Wow, I am on the edge of my seat as I write this </sarcasm>

Forgive me Grand Am, ARCA and WoO, but you aren't compelling enough for me to stay tuned this weekend either.

Maybe this is a sign from the Racing Gods, since next weekend will be filled with some of the most important races of the season (Monaco for F1, the 500 for the IndyCar Series, etc.) - perhaps they want us to take a weekend off so we recharge out batteries and sit in front of the tube all next weekend - because there is not much that is interesting to me — Don’t you agree?.

I won't get into the merits of the All-Star Challenge for NASCAR (because I really don't see any - do you?) - But instead of wasting time running an exhibition event, wouldn't this be a perfect time of year for the NEXTEL Cup Series to have an off weekend instead?  Shouldn't IndyCar consider scrapping this two weekend qualifying business (which is way too dragged out) and go for one action-packed Indy 500 qualifying weekend instead?  Shouldn't Champ Car have kept their China date so that maybe they could hold the attention of gear heads yearning for competitive action?

Have fun answering those questions --- I’ll be watching my Mets play the Yankees and spending time with friends instead of keeping up with racing this weekend.

Heck, it's all pointless when you get right down to it! It's a sport, a recreation, a "pass time." Why does it need to have a point? I think this is a weakness of modern times: everything has to have a "point" or its useless.

I'll be watching. Why not? I have always loved watching race car drivers fly around an oval track as fast as they can go to see who is  fastest, who can win. Heck, that's the point!

I think as bad as you are about writting about racing you should just take your ball and go home. You sure don't have any passion for racing if you don't care to watch racers going for a million bucks in a short and all out race. When you do write you get it wrong, look at your post on Dale Jr and see how far off you are. Yup, go write about stick and ball sports.

Jorge, I agree with some of your points.  A lot of the excitement at Indy during the month of May is gone.  The final eleven spots will be filled with the drivers we expected to be at the back of the pack.  The only questions that remain to be answered is how slow are the drivers in the back row and will they know how to get out of the way on race day when the front row drivers close up on them after the first few laps.  As far as the Nextel Cup All-Star Challenge race is concerned, that is something I may watch if I have the time.  It is fun to see the stock car guys run flat out for the win instead of the points racing many of them do each week.  Of course the thing related to racing that I will be doing most this weekend will be using my computer to stay on top of all the exciting news about ChampCar coming out of Europe.  I do not know if you keep tabs on your counterparts in the European motorsports press but it seems they have been going wild over the ChampCar media tour to promote the races in Belgium and Holland.  I just can't seem to get enough of all the positive press ChampCar has been getting these days.

Alright - sorry I haven't been able to get on here in a few hours - let's go through one by one --- I can't wait for more replies:

Paladin - I am not saying that these races are without their "points" - they are just not points I am particularly interested.  Yes, believe it or not, I really enjoy watching racing, but there are certain times when I find other things more enjoyable --- like this weekend.

Critical - Awww, I'm hurt that you don't appreciate my fine writing style - i'll pass that along to my editors though.

Seriously though, I am surprised you find that I am not passionate about motorsports - some people tell me I am too passionate about it.  The reason why I will be watching the "Stick and ball sports" this weekend is because there is nothing that makes me really want to sit down and be like "wow, I really enjoy this."

Next weekend - definitely.  The allure of the Indianapolis 500, the intensity in Formula One as drivers try to knock off the rookie that is stealing all the headlines, the strength in all of the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup series drivers as the endure the 600 mile battle that is the Coca-Cola event, etc.

Am I missing something about this weekend?

GearHead - You hit it right on the head about Indy (unfortunately).  I see your point about this weekend's exhibition race in NASCAR - but c'mon, every week drivers are giving it their all to win (and don't believe that whole points racing deal, they only talk about that after the race so you don't see how pissed they are at losing."  As for the million dollar angle - these guys already have more money that 90% of us, seeing them go for another Million isn't high on my list.

As for your Champ Car comment - I have seen some of the clippings from Europe and am optimistic.  At the same time though, they should be racing right now in China (or elsewhere if it was planned better - I mean the whole China deal came unglued a few months back).  The way you capture fans is at the track - PR only gets their attention in the short term.

What do you all think?

YA know, ya'll are overlooking the second most popular motorsport in the USA, the NHRA drag racing series. Now, me knowing this would not be an important weekend for racing, I was going to drive 5 hours to Bristol and see the best drag racing in the world. However, it was CANCELLED! They couldn't get the track surface right!!!! Can you believe that? It would of been PERFECT weather, not too hot or cold, the cars would of made tons of horsepower, speeds would of been in the 330's, but instead it's now in July when it's going to be hellaciously hot, speeds will suck, everyone will smoke the tires, and i'll probably have to work.

What a horrible NHRA weekend indeed.

It`s too bad this weekend is pointless for you. I always seem to find good racing every weekend as long as you widen some viewing horizons.

I will be enjoying the MotoGP race with my morning coffee on Sunday, and the sports cars(ALMS/Rolex) in the afternoon.

Anyhow...whatever happened to the idea of Racing One covering motorbike racing?
For crying out loud..there are more Americans in MotoGP than Champ Car.

Motorcycle racing......I know it's real dangerous butttt there's nothing like seeing two stock cars beating on each other or a top fuel dragster going from 0-330 in a quarter mile.

I agree with the NHRA...hey, I have watched all forms of racing...I even enjoy a day at a horse track. What is interesting is why fans enjoy one form over another. Since I come from an F1 background, I consider it the best...but, a big but...It`s not exciting racing in recent times. And Nascar?...yeah I watch, but not like most people that think they invented racing and there is no other choice.

For me it`s about speed, the appearance of danger and the close competition.
MotoGP does all that, and to me it`s the best and purest racing on the planet in 2007...this coming from a car guy. You can`t get any more racy than that without having to throw bogus cautions ;-)
