Stuck in Neutral

Hendrick - Learn from the N.Y. Yankees

First, let me say this, I think Dale Earnhardt Jr. officially announcing that he has "found room at the (Hendrick Motorsports) Inn" is an ideal situation.  He announced he was leaving Dale Earnhardt Inc. so that he could fight for a championship - and there is no team that is stronger than Hendrick, both in the engine department and also in the chassis side of things (c'mon, can anybody deny the fact that they have the best Car of Tomorrow in NASCAR?)

That said, a fair warning to Hendrick Motorsports:  You are now the New York Yankees of NASCAR.

Despite being a championship caliber team in the 90’s, the Yankees wanted more - and they went out and stockpiled some of the best talent in baseball (Alex Rodriguez, Bobby Abreu, etc.) in order to become the only dominant team in baseball.  Unfortunately, at the moment the "evil empire" went out and spent money as if it were going out of style (2000), they started falling out of the championship picture.

There are many other examples in all other forms of sports - Real Madrid (Soccer), New York Rangers (Hockey), etc.

The point being that it takes more than talented athletes to claim championships....you have to develop a sense of team and all work together for the organization to continue their championship winning tradition.

Hendrick Motorsports has long been known for being one of the strongest "Teams" in NASCAR, I hope that with their latest acquisition, they remember what got them to where they are today and don't change their winning philosophy.

That's the only way Dale Earnhardt Jr. will achieve his championship goal.

I couldn't diagree with you more. While King George has gathered up as many established stars as possible, HMS now has ONE driver that even had a single win before joining the team, that being Junior. Gordon, Johnson and Mears all had zero wins and both Jeff and Jimmie were raw rookies when they made their first Cup appearance with HMS. I see no likeness whatsoever.

Marc,

I see your argument, and I agree with it for my argument about Real Madrid and the New York Rangers - however, I feel that it is still valid as far as the Yankees are concerned.

If you look at the original championship roster of 1996 (and the three after that), most of the key players were bred within the Yankee farm system (Jeter, Bernie Williams, Leyritz, etc.) as well as some players who had not won championships with other teams (Tino Martinez comes to mind)

Okay, baseball talk aside and back to the racing point....what do you think will be the final outcome of this move by Junior - can he win a championship at Hendrick?

Jorge,

I believe maturity will be the key here. I'm hoping the team concept prevails. I do know this. Casey Mears is surrounded with such an abundance of talent he can't help but be the real winner in the whole HMS scenario, and yes, I do believe Junior will reap the benefits of the move and win a championship with Hendrick. The removal of such intense internal pressure will make a tremendous improvement in his performance.

I find it hard to believe Jr. went to drive with Jeff Gordon. I deeply believe that Hendrick Motorsports, may have been a good decision for Jr. as they definately are the strongest team on the track. I also believe that Theresa was selfish, and very greedy when she chose to not give part ownership to a company, a legend built for his children. As a diehard JR. fan, I willl continue to support Jr. even though he did sign with a rival.

Maybe HMS has become the Yankees of NASCAR, but the important question may be, is Rick Hendrick the Steinbrenner of NASCAR! So far, Hendrick seems to have a better hand on the tiller.
