DEI Not a Museum

Tony Stewart said last year that without Dale Earnhardt Jr., Dale Earnhardt Inc. is just a museum.

Well, after last week’s media trip to Dale Earnhardt Inc., I might have to disagree with Stewart.

With the absence of a majority of the memorabilia, and the 21 trophies that Earnhardt Jr. and Michael Waltrip combined earned with the team it’s hard to call DEI a museum.

No offense to Martin Truex Jr., Paul Menard and Mark Martin, but without a bunch of Junior's No. 8 items on display I would expect visitors to go down big time at DEI.

Although, DEI often changes out a couple displays the showroom there’s not that much to see. Unless want to see the clothes Earnhardt wore in the movie “Dale” or see the current waste of space display dedicated to the tires in NASCAR I would save yourself the trip. That's unless some changes are made.

There are a couple things to see, I guess, like Martin Truex Jr.’s championship Busch car, a cabinet with some of Earnhardt Sr’s trophies and memorabilia, and Sr’s past driver’s suits on the wall.

The best part of the shop is the center part of the building with a bunch of previous cars, including Junior's, on display, and even that’s not that great because they have it glassed off like the cars were in a zoo. Since the media visit was held in this area the cars were removed. But there was no reason to remove Junior’s presence from the showroom, as the media event was not held in this area. In fact, it was still open to the public. In my opinion, if Dale Jr’s memorabilia does return to the showroom part it will be due to the publicity it received.

My suggestion for the future for the DEI glass car room would be to rope off a straight walkway down the middle with the cars lined up on both sides so the fans could get closer to take pictures.

Now that the Cup cars are in the old Ginn Racing shop, let's hope that opens the doors for an actual museum, or as they call it showroom, at DEI to showcase everything the team has accomplished.

For now, if you want to visit a real Dale Earnhardt museum travel the extra hour up to Richard Childress Racing in Welcome, North Carolina.

I went to the fall Charlotte race this year and decided to take a trip to DEI, and I must say I was let down. First off, they CHARGE FOR PARKING! DEI is the ONLY shop I went to that charged for parking, not even Hendrick or Roush charged and they are a lot bigger than DEI. Secondly, most of the cars as Jwack said are behind glass like it's a zoo. The problem is that the glass is curved so if you want to take a picture it's next to impossible because your flash will always get in the way. Plus, the cars are stacked one behind another so some of the cars you really want to see aren't entirely visible.

Ultimately, it is very sad that they did this to Dale Jr and even Michael Waltrip. Hendrick has trophies and cars from previous drivers, including some from from Kyle Busch. DEI should have a bigger museum, especially if they want to charge for parking. Plus, it's about 20-30 minutes outside the Charlotte area.

I guess I'm one of the lucky one's, the time I visited DEI, Jr,Michael and Steve Park were still driving for DEI. There were all kinds of things to look at trophies, all drivers uniforms, a room that was displayed with different items that had Dale Sr and Jr on them, was a tv going with old commericials of the drivers, a shop to buy souveners at for all the drivers even Kerry Earnhardt, but I do think the cars were always behind the glass. I really enjoyed myself.

Dale Jr is turning into such a freakin' diva. He abandoned this team that his father built for him but he wants it to be some sort of shrine to him. He's nothing special, a good driver, but he's not some sort of legend that his father is. People need to realize this.

penskefan, Dale Jr has accomplished quite a bit in his NASCAR career. He abandoned DEI because he's not winning. Would you want to stay at a team that couldn't give you the equipment needed to win? As a Dale Jr fan, I know he's not anything close to the legend his father was, but you can't deny the fact that he's a good driver. He's got two Busch championships as well as wins on short tracks to restrictor plate tracks. He's won the Daytona 500 and holds the record for most wins in a row at Talladega.

As I said above, at Hendrick there are trophies from all drivers, no matter if they still drive for them or not. Regardless of your opinions, DEI is hardly anything without an Earnhardt there, and a lot of people that would go to DEI would go to see the cars and trophies that Dale Jr, the sport's most popular drive, won.

Obviously, DEI doesn't have an obligation to him anymore but DEI would not be half of what it was without the success of Dale Jr. It's also sad to see there's no recognition of Michael Waltrip's first Daytona 500 win or the win Steve Park got the race after Dale Sr. died.

After going to other shops, DEI is pretty pathetic in comparison. Hendrick and Roush were pretty cool, I can't wait to go to RCR though I hear it's the best.

A lost part of all this is the legacy of Steve Park.  I know it's only speculation, but I believe, had Sr lived on, Steve would still be a part of DEI, instead of just a side not in its history.

BamaBluesman...Yes, I also think things would have been differernt for Steve Park and I also think things would have gone differently for M. Waltrip, those were guys Dale Sr. wanted to stay in his co. Not even sure if Park drives at all anymore, a few times last year(I think) he was in a few truck races.
