Somewhere Bobby Ginn is Smiling

So there you were, just as I was after the Dale Earnhardt Jr. press conference, trying to put together in your head just what Jr’s next move will be.

Does he go to Hendrick, does he go to Childress, does he go to Gibbs? Well before you buy into your office pool and commit dozens of your own hard-earned Washingtons on a pick, you should know something. This is not as cut and dry as you might think. Mr. Earnhardt must take into consideration a few team issues before his ultimate decision is made. Some of which are as follows:

1.  Not that ego really has anything to do with it, but if Jr. takes his talent and Budweiser’s considerable cash with him, will they be less than happy if they are not the central focus of the team he goes to? You need look no further than Hendrick Motorsports to see the crux of this issue. At Hendrick you have a four-time champ in Jeff Gordon, and Nextel Cup’s reigning champ in Jimmie Johnson. The 24/48 camp is the main focus at Hendrick and it is hard to imagine that Dale Earnhardt Jr. will eclipse them in attention.

2. Richard Childress Racing seems to be a more inviting target because their drivers are not as accomplished as far as victories and championships go. Kevin Harvick has been very supportive of Earnhardt during his decision to test the waters of free-agency. Jeff Burton is a very accommodating guy, and Clint Bowyer does not seem to be an ego-maniac, so opened arms would be all over the place at RCR to bring another Dale Earnhardt to the place were the number 3 might be re-activated.

3. Joe Gibbs Racing is interesting. Earnhardt and two-time Cup champ Tony Stewart are good friends. Let’s assume that Tony and Jr. will be talking a lot about Jr. attending team meetings on Tuesdays of next year. “The Coach” loves signing veteran players, this move would be right up his alley.

On second thought, let’s put the brakes on and scratch issues one, two and three.

Why? One of the main sticking points to his possible relationship with Hendrick, Childress, and Gibbs is the fact that Earnhardt has a cottage industry called JR Motorsports. Earnhardt wants the operations of JR Motorsports to run in concert with whichever Cup team he signs with. That makes Hendrick, RCR and Gibbs a difficult fit. All three teams already do big business in Busch, running multiple car efforts there weekly. It would be hard to think that something could be worked out when you factor in what Jr. wishes to do with his Busch operation.

Now where were we? Oh yeah!

4. Ford, Dodge, or Toyota! Well we can pretty much forget that. Dale Jr. has a sizeable personal services contract with GM and Chevy. Chances are he may not make as much money as a salesman with Ford or Dodge. Toyota on the other hand can throw a heck of a lot of cash at him, but the public relations nightmare of an Earnhardt driving for Toyota is something he may not wish to deal with. Chances are the Michael Waltrip saga has already hipped him to that.

So scratch Roush, Penske, Evernham, Yates, and Davis.

5. Teams like Frontrow, Hass, Hall of Fame Racing, etc. are not calling Kelly Earnhardt Elledge right now. These teams, though they show flashes of brilliance from time to time, have no chance because the ability to match the resources of top-tier teams simply don’t exist, and Earnhardt wants to win now. He does not want to go to a team that presents a lateral move or a step back in terms of the quality of machines he will drive.

Well, so far I have dashed whole lot of hopes here. I doubt if I have made many freinds out there, but you still have that office pool to win and I am going to give you the winning pick with one simple statement – “Somewhere, Bobby Ginn Jr. is smiling!”

Ginn Racing is just what Dale Earnhardt Jr. is looking for. They have competitive cars, great personnel, great facilities, a car owner who many think is the next Rick Hendrick, and no big Busch Series operation. Bobby Ginn has impressed me right off the bat with the way he has gone about his racing. Ginn, the South Carolina native with a sizeable empire in the resort industry, is a big thinker, and an even bigger doer. People, the man has a blimp! Hendrick doesn’t even have a blimp! Ginn Racing has the flexability to accommodate Earnhardt at every turn. Part-time drivers, drivers with short term contracts, a part-time legend in Mark Martin, and a talented young gun in Regan Smith. This is a guy who thinks outside the box. Ginn got into the NASCAR game to win. Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Bobby Ginn Jr. were made for eachother. Oh, did I mention that Ginn is a Chevy guy?

Junior Johnson cashed in on Darrell Waltrip, Childress on Dale Sr., Hendrick on Gordon, and now the next great partnership could be Jr. and Jr. I smell victory here so there you have it. Keep your mouth shut on this one, and bide your time. When the pool opens, don’t even smile before your name is called to make your pick. To some, you may have taken a longshot but believe me, we both will be laughing all the way to the bank. Come to think of it, so will Jr. and Jr.!

Mark,
One other positive note about Bobby Ginn's team is that the 01 car will most likely be in the Top 35 Owner's points at the end of the season. If Dale Jr was to take over the 01 ride, then he would be assured starting positions in the first 5 races. That is another win-win situation for Dale Jr, his sponsors, and Bobby Ginn. I think I could get used to seeing a red Budweiser 01 racing around the track, and what could be better for all those rowdy Earnhardt fans down in Hazzard County !!

But seriously, what ever team Dale Jr goes to, at least he can look forward to seeing his car owner at the track and in Victory Lane !

I think Mark is dead on with his analysis, here. Although, there are alot of hurdles in the way. Jr. will have to sift through all the offers and all the chatter to get to the correct decision. Will Jr. come to the same realization that we have? We can only, hope.

The only thing i'm not so sure about with Ginn racing is that Ginn is a fairly unproven race team. They don't have any wins or championships, and even though Mark did well earlier in the year there are also some races where he did mediocre. I think right now Jr would look better with an older organization such as RCR or Gibbs. I'd wait til later in the season to see how well Ginn racing is doing before saying that would be the perfect place. Remember, Jr said it's not about the money it's about winning championships.

I have a problem with Ginn's COT program, it's no better than DEI's, and Jr will need an all around program to become a contender for the title. Gibb's program would be next best to the full Hendrick's stable. Who would Hendrick cut to make room for Jr? Mear's?

OK so your point is Dale's gonna leave a 2nd tier team like DEI and go to a third tier team...like Ginn racing where he can win zero championships and even fewer races...he's 32...Jr doesn't have time to wait for Ginn to "turn it around"....and with teammates like Marlin and Nemechek...how can you lose with those two aces in the hole....I've got a better chance of signing Jr...than Ginn does...Gee RCR there's a real stretch of the imagination....but Jr has repeatedly said he doesn't want to wearthe three on his door...he doesn't want ppl to aappeal to him because of his daddy, he wants to carve his own fame....GIBBS is now saying yea...bring on Jr...o yeah we've got Daniels as a sposorship...sorry budwieser....You know why Gordon and Johnson get all the attention...because they are SUCCESSFUL....what makes them this way...because they drive for a great team...the best in all of NASCAR...yeah...y would Jr want to go there...its not like he's looking for a way to be SUCCESSFUL!

Ginn just took full ownership of the team this year. He has gotten great returns on what he has put into the sport to this point. Just because Hendrick's is the place to be right now doesn't mean that Hendrick's will be the place to be down the road. Who was Childress before Earnhardt, anyway? This could be the next great driver \owner combinations.

At least you are a Gordon fan that understands why he has won so many races, not because he is a great driver, but that he drives good equipment for a good team. It's not because he has out driven anybody, hell, Schrader would probably win a championship in the 24 and with a lot less whining.

Yea keep cry'n that your drivers dont drive in at top equipment, but Gordon has the balls to take the bull by the horn and win races...see talladega this year....he's not like say a Jeff Burton...who didn't have the balls to take the bristol win....and by your comments, you want Jr....to risk the prime of his career on a chance...that maybe Ginn will be a good team...yea...maybe Gordon should hurry up and leave Hendrick just in case Aikmans team might be the team to beat in 30 years....watch your back Raines!

Most of the racing world expects Jr. to go to RCR. All that alot of us are saying is that Ginn is a viable option. Ginn has come along way in a short period of time and Ginn is not just another team owner.

Last time I checked the only good COT programs are Hendrick's and Gibb's. Granted RCR might be ahead of Ginn in the COT car, but not by much. It's not like Burton and Harvick are tearing things up in the COT at least when they are not on fire.

Jr. is in a totally different situation than Gordon. So, I don't quite get your last joke. We all know that Gordon has a life time contract with Hendrick's. The question would be that if Gordon left Hendricks where would he go?

You are just not paying attention if you don't know that the Hendrick's COT cars are better than everyone else's. Once again, as a typical Gordon fan, you think Jeff Gordon is the only guy with "balls". Get a clue, he is not winning because he has "balls".

Joe Gibbs is out unless there is a sponsor change for Jr. "The coach" does'nt condone supporting adult beverage companies and never will.

Hendrick is also out because his stable if more than full and Jr. needs to be the "top driver" whereever he lands.

RCR is out because Jr. was clear about his desire to drive the "3" in the twilight of his career...not now. Although, he could race the 33 in lieu of...?

Ginn seems like a great fit, but resources would need to be ramped up to make Jr. happy. Would Bobby Ginn be willing to give Jr. the "power" to make big decisions for his company? He would if Jr. were part owner which makes even more sense. Jr. not only brings the name, the fans, the $ and the sponsor, but a legion of faithful employees who could give a damn about DEI if he's not there. With Hendrick resources, Ginn could potentially become on par with that organization within three seasons.

This will an interesting process.....

It was a tough decision to leave, I'm sure, but the decision on where to go next is probably even more difficult for Jr.

I know that Jr. doesn't want to drive the 3 until the end of his career, but I still expect him to go to RCR.

However it seems that Ginn is offering exactly what Jr described of the situation that he wanted. Although, if you are correct and Ginn is three seasons away, then Ginn might be out as a possibility. Jr. wants instant results not three year results so the RCR opportunity would appear to be more attractive with that fact.

Do you think Jr. would have any reservations about using Hendrick equipment at Ginn when the Hendrick boys are his main competition?

You are correct, this should be interesting.

RE:Roofflap's comments
To answer your last question; Ginn is running Hendrick’s equipment now which is what makes his organization that much more attractive to Jr.?  I don't Jr. really cares that his "main competition" is the Hendrick boys. In fact if he were able to beat them using their equipment it would be that much sweeter for him. Team partnering is the new way of doing business in this sport and will only become more prevalent in the future. Probably one of the reasons DEI is not where they need to be and potentially the reason Jr. wanted control...?

Three seasons is exaggerated timeline. If Mark Martin would have continued with a full season this year where might he be in the points? Probably top three, which means he could have potentially won a championship this year in Ginn/Hendrick equipment. Makes you wonder?

I agree with sgb5150.

Seems to me that if Ginn really wants to succeed all he has to do is make Martin an offer he can't refuse. Bring on that Army car!
